Celebrate 130 years of Clissold Park – Sunday, 22 September 2019

A celebration of 130 years since the park was opened to the public after a long campaign to save it from development. This event is funded and run by the Clissold Park User Group and local volunteers in association with Peter Bedford Housing Association who are celebrating their 50th birthday.

This event has been planned to coincide with Open House London and Car Free Day 2019 when Stoke Newington Church Street will be closed to cars. All welcome!

Open House 10am – 5pm
As part of Open House London, Clissold House will be open from 10am to 5pm.

  • 11am, Drawing Room
    Local historian, Amir Dotan, will be giving an illustrated talk about the history of the park.
  • 12.30pm – 3.30pm
    Guided tours of Clissold House on the hour and half hour.  Please meet at the ‘back door’ of the house (the garden side facing the Old Church)

130th Anniversary Celebration 12 Noon –  5pm
Join us for an afternoon of free activities and entertainment next to Clissold House and in the dog-free area.

  • Clissold Park User Group stall
    Come and say hello, find out more about what we do and tell us what you think about the park. Sign up for our newsletter, buy our postcards, maps and posters (by local artist Anna Hymas), find out how you can volunteer in the park.
  • Tree walk, 2pm – 3pm
    A guided tree walk led by local expert Russell Miller looking at Clissold’s old trees: what they are and why they matter for people and wildlife. Meet at the Tree Musketeers’ stall in the dog free area.
  • Music stage 1pm – 2.15pm, 3.15 – 4.30pm
    Live feel-good music from local musicians
  • Hackney Playbus
    This double-decker bus has been converted into a fun play palace with lots of games and activities for children.
  • Fire engine visit 3pm – 4pm
    Come and meet the fire fighters and get up close to their fire engine
  • Local businesses:
    The Twisted Fork
    The world’s first magic themed cafe and award-winning coffee shop positioned at 155 Stoke Newington High St performing fun magic for all the family. Check them out to learn more about the magic cafe, their amazing Magic School and their evening shows.
    Hackney Local Buyers Club
    Online membership club and discount card supporting independent businesses with discounts at local shops, cafes, bars and restaurants.
  • Free exercise sessions
    Yoga sessions from Yoga on the Lane at 1pm, 2pm, 3pm and 4pm
    Alexander Technique from Mindful Posture: suffering from 21st century posture? Sessions throughout the afternoon
    15 minute exercise classes for kids to 90 from Healthy Minds, Healthy Bods. Sessions throughout the afternoon.
  • Information, advice and local services
    St Mary’s Church: Believing in our community, what’s happening at St Mary’s?
    Tree Musketeers: local people who do practical stuff to plant and care for trees in Hackney
    Hackney Healthwatch: independent health champions for local residents and health service users
    Smokefree Hackney: supporting people who live, work and study in Hackney to give up smoking
    Crime prevention advice: police officers for Clissold ward will provide crime prevention advice and answer any questions you might have about local policing.
    Community Library van: find out more about this service for local people who cannot access libraries due to temporary or permanent illness, frailty or special needs.
    North London Welcome Project: a group of Stoke Newington residents working as a community to resettle a Syrian family in the area.
    Oxjam Clothes Swap: bring and swap your unwanted clothes – and in return donate to Oxjam Hackney what you feel the clothes are worth. All the proceeds raised from the event go towards the smooth running of the festival. Oxjam, the music festival that beats poverty, is taking place in October in Hackney.

Growing Communities
Visit the growing communities garden (next to the aviary) for a seasonal taster event.

Peter Bedford Housing Association in the park
Local housing association Peter Bedford is celebrating its 50th birthday with a party in the Old Bowling Green.
